Gründerzeit style & big city flair in
Andräviertel & Elisabeth-Vorstadt

A stroll through the urban Andräviertel with its historic buildings showcases the turn of the century. The avenue-lined Franz-Joseph-Straße, Salzburgs version of the Ringstraße, conveys a big city flair. Many creative start-ups, agencies, and restaurants have settled here and are creating a new ”Gründerzeit”.

The bastions built during the Thirty Years War under Paris Lodron were demolished in 1860 as part of the regulation of the Salzach and the Gründerzeit New Town was built according to a plan. The loss of the fortress character and the lifting of the building ban as well as the opening of the central station initiated the economic upturn in Salzburg after many years of crisis and stagnation. The connection of the New Town to the central station located in the former Froschheim was slower than expected. In the densely populated Elisabeth-Vorstadt, we see Gründerzeit town villas embedded in gardens, apartment buildings, communal housing from the interwar period, and the numerous hotel towers of the present day. The multicultural central station district often changes its face – the next profound change is on the horizon with the construction of the new state service center (Burtscher Durig). Due to the high density of high-rise buildings such as the Hotel Europa, Perron, and the headquarters of the regional health insurance fund, it is, alongside Lehen, the most urban district in Salzburg.
