The tour leads to the south of the city, Aigen, which was discovered by the Romantics and became a fixture on the Grand Tour of aristocrats, painters, and writers. The ”beautiful Aignerthal” was discovered early as an excursion destination and as a health resort with a healing bitter spring. The English landscape garden at Aigen Castle was a meeting place for the secret society of the Illuminati and W.A. Mozart may have found inspiration for The Magic Flute there. The upper classes have always been attracted to this heavenly location between the Gaisberg and the Salzach and built ”Swiss houses” and prestigious villas here. The ”real” Trapp family, who became world-famous thanks to the film ”Sound of Music”, lived in the Villa Trapp designed by Valentin Ceconi. Key modernist buildings such as the St. Josef College, the Parsch Church, the St. Virgil Education Centre and outstanding contemporary architecture such as the rehearsal stages and workshops of the Landestheater can also be found here.
Tour highlights: Aigen train station – St. Josef College (arbeitsgruppe 4) – Villa Trapp (Valentin Ceconi) – Ruperti settlement (Thomas Schwarz) – Aigen Castle – Aigen Castle Inn with Friendship Hill – Villa Bellevue – Aigen rehearsal stage (Architekturwerkstätte Zopf) – Tesla car dealership (Volkmar Burgstaller)
If desired, the tour can be done by bike and can be extended further to Haus Garstenauer or to Bildungshaus St. Virgil.
